Barebones Woodsman Field Hatchet

Most people prefer a felling wood ax or a full-sized splitting ax when it comes to processing pieces of wood. But for those who prefer a one-handed approach to splitting wood, the hatchet is the go-to tool. And when it comes to hatchets, very few can compare to the performance and craftsmanship of the new Woodsman Field Hatchet. True to the ideals of a field hatchet, the Woodsman makes quick work of any pile of firewood you have in your backyard.

The secret is in Barebones’ use of heavy-duty high carbon steel blade. Other hatchets also use the same material but not in the kind of craftsmanship that Barebones employs. The 4-inch wide blade provides exceptional coverage of lumber pieces, allowing you to split them in as few strokes as possible. The blade’s edge is sharp enough to shave barks off wood.

The other side of the chopping blade features a hammerhead. It is smaller than other hatchets on the market but can still deliver precision blows. When it comes to flattening a variety of surfaces, this component of the Woodsman comes in very handy.

The Woodsman’s handle has an unobtrusive design. There are no fancy artwork or carved ornaments. What it does showcase is the very fine grains of hickory wood. It is both lightweight and sleek, allowing you to hold and swing it with ease. All of the weight of the hatchet is in the ax head, giving you that force you need to drive it through the log.

Barebones is also throwing away an elegant-looking sheath for protecting the blade when not in use. It is not made of leather, though. What Barebones used is 900-denier polyester to give it a more modern look.

The Woodsman Field Hatchet makes it so easy to split logs. It looks lovely, too.
