1. Back To The Future (1985)
Netflix now has part 1 and part 2 of Back to the Future, arguably the most significant and loved sci-fi films of all time. They follow an average high school student, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) as he deals with being bullied at school by his principal. He also has to put up with the complicated relationship between his attractive mother (Lea Thompson) and dorky dad (Crispin Glover), who he sees being bullied and intimidated by his supervisor Biff (Thomas F. Wilson). However, Marty is sent back in time by Doc (Christopher Lloyd), his bizarre scientist friend who souped-up a DeLorean into a time machine. Marty lands in the 1950s at exactly the moment his parents were about to meet and fall in love which causes some trouble. He has to make sure they get together or else he’ll never exist.
2. Marriage Story (2019)
Marriage Story starts with a couple telling us all the things that made them fall in love, however this film by Noah Baumbach, quickly dismisses the fantasy. This movie follows the tale of a divorce between a couple who realize they want different things in life and reveals how difficult it is to move forward. Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) is an actress and her husband, Charlie Barber (Adam Driver) is a playwright. Charlie wants to stay in New York, while Nicole wants to take a new job in Los Angeles. With reasons piling up, this becomes the final straw and they decide to break up. They both wrangle with their resentments as they divide all they own with the help of their lawyers.
3. Senna
Senna is a sports documentary and even if you are not a fan of motor racing, there’s still plenty about it to enjoy. Ayrton Senna, Brazilian Formula 1 driver and a three-time championship winner, who lost his life after an accident in the San Marino Grand Prix 1994. He was regarded as both a star and sometimes rogue around the F1 paddocks due to his exhilarating and competitive way of racing, although no one doubted his talent for driving. As if Kapadia, (director of Amy and Diego Maradona), created this brilliant documentary by merging race recordings, home video and expert analysis provided by the racing professionals into a captivating tale. A one of a kind, fascinating enigma, Senna was idolized in his country.
4. Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark (1981)
The Indiana Jones franchise has seen numerous additions over time, however, the first is regarded by its fans as the greatest. Raiders of the Lost Ark has an archeology professor in the 1930s, by the exotic name of Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford). He is also an explorer investigating ancient ruins for archeological study and raiding them of their treasures. In a race with the Nazis, Jones goes to Egypt with his ex-lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) to find the Ark of Covenant first. Raiders of the Lost Ark is an amazing throwback of the old good versus bad pulp adventure tales, with an attractive, witty lead, truly evil bad guys and remarkable sets with a strong script.
5. Extraction
Extraction is a Netflix original comedy crime-thriller and if you liked John Wick, you are going to love this too. Tyler Rake, played by Chris Hemsworth, is a hired gun sent to recover the son of a gang leader in the middle of a drug war. There is nothing new to the story as such and it is a lot like all the other movies that have good guys saving the day. However, the action scenes are well worth a watch and which goes without saying with Sam Hargrave directing. He directed some of the best MCU fight scenes. The film is no drag, and anyway, settling down to watch Hemsworth is always worth it.
6. Zodiac (2007)
The Zodiac Killer is one of the most infamous criminals to date. He kept San Francisco terrified for almost 2 decades and was never caught. Instead of focusing on solving the crime, this 2007 movie by David Fincher, uses the Zodiac Killer case as inspiration for character analysis, concentrating on the three men fixated on capturing the killer. Obsessed with the mystery, Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes the lead, as an artist for the San Francisco Chronicle who would be more than happy to crack a message sent to the paper by the killer. He tries to make sense of the clues with the help of Paul Avery (Robert Downey Jr.) a crime reporter, and David Toschi, a homicide detective played by Mark Ruffalo. Zodiac is a long movie, but with the amazing direction by Fincher, you can’t help but become engrossed in this thriller.
7. GoldenEye
For all the die-hard James Bond fans out there, GoldenEye, now on Netflix, is just the movie. It’s exhilarating to watch Pierce Brosnan displaying the true Bond brand valor, in this, the seventeenth Bond movie.
GoldenEye was directed by Martin Campbell and released in 1995. The film portrays the fearless as ever Bond, as he struggles to avert an ex-MI6 scallywag agent, Alec Trevelyan, played by Sean Bean, from launching a satellite system that would bring about the international economic breakdown, starting from London, of course.
Being filmed when it was, it is no surprise that the plot revolves around the Cold war era. Shot beautifully in Russia, Monte Carlo and Puerto Rico, this was the first Bond film using stunning computer-generated imagery.
8. The Matrix
Can you differentiate dreams and reality? This is exactly what happens with Neo, intelligently played by Keanu Reeves, as he wakes up in a hostile virtual underworld in The Matrix. This sci-fi action film, written and directed by the Wachowskis, was released in 1999.
More rightly considered as in the cyberpunk category of sci-fi, The Matrix is largely influenced by martial arts and Japanese simulation. Not to forget, the fabulous bullet time visual effects, which makes the simulated reality captivating. Finding the movie had a vast popularity among brainy viewers led producers to carry on with the story and create a trilogy and now Matrix 4 is in the making. The Matrix remains unparalleled in the sci-fi fiction genre and a Netflix must-watch.
9. Road To Perdition
Based on a graphic novel, Road to Perdition is an American crime drama, directed by Sam Mendes. The punch of this movie is the ethereal relationship between father and son. Tom Hanks is the father, Tyler Hoechlin, and he has a dilemma. Should he side with his son or stay loyal to his boss, John Rooney, played by the acting legend Paul Newman. The plot styles the era of the Great Depression, in 1931, and has the father-son duo planning revenge on a powerful wrongdoer, and not without collateral damage.
The cinematography skills of Academy award winner Mendes are apparent in the poignant way he delivers this mobster drama with a subtle streak that is hard to miss. If you are a Godfather fan, chances are, you have already watched this long ago.
10. Can’t Hardly Wait
Can’t Hardly Wait is the movie from the 90s that became a teen cult trendsetter. It’s a romantic comedy written and directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, with a simple plot and the least possible budget, but it still means something to its fans. The story revolves around a high-spirited graduation party, relying largely on a before-they-were-famous cast. It is all about Preston Meyers (Ethan Embry) trying to express his out-of-this-world love for Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a turn of exciting events leading to it and a sweet happy ending. The soundtrack complements the flamboyant tone of the movie.
This Netflix offering is a nostalgic cue of an era long gone, but can still be watched for a feel-good vibe.
11. Minority Report
Although released in 2002, Minority Report is a movie that doesn’t feel dated by its uncanny predictions of the future. It is a sci-fi, tech-noir thriller lightly centered on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 short story ‘The Minority Report’.
In this timeless classic, the sci-fi guru Steven Spielberg has enigmatically put forth a plot on how a society based on the progressive graphical inspiration will evolve with technology that makes it possible for cops to fore-see a crime before it is committed. Tom Cruise, doing justice to his role as Chief of Pre-crime unit, John Anderton, delivered a performance of a lifetime playing the fugitive on the run.
We still have a few years before 2054, but you can experience Minority Report illusions with a gaming console even today, or better yet, enjoy the movie on Netflix.
12. Molly’s Game
Molly’s Game was the first movie Aaron Sorkin directed way back in 2017. This crime movie, based on the true story of Molly Bloom, has interesting dialogue and sharp edgy characters.
Jessica Chastain (Molly Bloom) received attention from the FBI due to the secret poker realm she ran for a decade before finally getting caught. Giving an insight into the high-stakes poker game sphere involving celebs, sports stars, businessmen, and many others who mattered, makes this movie one the most enthralling true stories.
Whether you want to experience fast-paced futuristic action, romantic movies or you’re looking for thrills on the sofa, these are just a tempting selection of some of the best movies Netflix has to offer. Each is guaranteed to deliver, so ramp up the sound, get the popcorn popped and stay down in front, it’s time to get lost for a while in a darn good movie.
