Why Is CBD-Infused Coffee a Thing?
Beverage Digest Executive Editor Duane Stanford says a cultural shift in consumption is contributing to the growth in CBD-infused drinks: “Consumers are increasingly looking for natural products with health benefits and are reducing their alcohol intake. CBD drinks are positioned as a potential aid for conditions ranging from anxiety to muscle pain.”
According to the 2019 U.S. CBD Drinks Report from research firm Zenith Global (publishers of industry newsletter Beverage Digest), the CBD drinks market will surge to more than $1.4 billion in annual sales by 2023.
The success of CBD products, from balms and snacks to pet treats and beauty products, make clear that CBD is here to stay. And coffee beans pair particularly well with the beneficial antioxidant and calming effects of CBD. Early adopters have been adding a few drops of CBD oil to their coffee for years, but pre-infused grounds, beans, and pods do a better job of masking the flavor of bitter-tasting CBD oils. And makers of pre-mixed cold brews have gotten in on the action, so CBD coffee drinks have become common in grab-and-go coolers, too.
Heads up: CBD can mask the effects of caffeine, so don’t exceed the expert consensus of a maximum of five cups of coffee per day. And always read labels carefully to see the exact milligrams of CBD you are ingesting with each cup of coffee.
