Does CBD Make You Sleepy?
CBD helps the body maximize serotonin, which improves general feelings of wellbeing. And positive mental and emotional states facilitate relaxation and sleep. A 2018 report published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews looked at CBD and the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain (nerve pain), which can also affect sleep. Researchers looked at 16 previously published scientific studies testing CBD's effectiveness. They concluded that CBD does help reduce the intensity of neuropathic pain, thereby reducing psychological distress, which eases difficulty sleeping. It’s a demonstrated positive feedback loop.
Established in 2012, HempMeds was one of the first companies to offer hemp-derived CBD oil and other cannabinoids in the United States and abroad. The company’s website points out that scientific studies can differ and contradict each other about whether or not CBD can make you sleepy: “One thing we do know is that CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system to help our bodies achieve homeostasis. This could easily help relieve stress, and in turn, help us sleep better.”
Sleep Studies
The Journal of Pharmacology published a study demonstrating that test subjects who consumed 160mg of CBD slept longer than subjects who did not. And a 2018 report published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews looked at CBD and the treatment of chronic neuropathic pain (nerve pain), which can also affect sleep. Researchers looked at 16 previously published scientific studies testing CBD's effectiveness. They concluded that CBD does help with pain relief and reduce neuropathic pain the intensity. This resulted in subjects reporting an easier time sleeping and reduced psychological distress. Another study by the University of Paris concluded that CBD can help subjects regulate their circadian rhythm (our natural sleep-wake cycle).
Meanwhile, prescription sleeping pills can be addictive. According to the Mayo Clinic, “All prescription sleeping pills have risks, especially for people with certain medical conditions, including liver or kidney disease. Always talk with your doctor before trying a new treatment for insomnia.” The narcotic effect of sleeping pill use can also increase the risk of nighttime falls and injury due to dizziness or lightheadedness.
Other side effects of prescription sleeping pills may include headaches, gastrointestinal problems, prolonged drowsiness, allergic reactions, and daytime memory and performance problems. A naturally occurring, non-habit-forming substance, CBD is readily absorbed by the body and helps with homeostasis. This balancing effect helps remove factors that can interfere with sleep. No more tossing and turning!
Is CBD Safe for Driving?
In larger doses, CBD can potentially make you drowsy, according to the FDA. But the research we’ve uncovered is inconclusive whether or not CBD makes you “sleepy” and sedated or just emotionally relaxed. In the recommended doses, CBD does seem to be safe for driving. As always, consult with your doctor before consuming CBD for a health condition.
While experts tend to agree that CBD itself does not cause sleepiness in normal dosages, it does help regulate circadian rhythms that lead to better sleep. The FDA considers CBD to be a “natural remedy,” and dosages should be based on body weight. Cannabinoids bind to lipids or fat cells, and heavier people need more milligrams and vice versa. To learn more about this, check out our article: Dosage Amounts: How Much CBD Should I Take?
According to Honest Marijuana, an adult weighing more than 120 pounds would need a dose of about 25–30mg of CBD to feel “sleepy.” According to their research, this dosage should increase with body weight by about 5 mg CBD per 10 lbs. For most adults, as long as you’re not taking a dosage above 15 mg, you are unlikely to feel fatigued as a side effect whatsoever. Individual tolerance and reaction to CBD vary based on a long list of biological factors, including what else you’ve eaten or how hydrated you are on a particular day.
