Do Terpenes Get You High?
No. But they do work in tandem with cannabinoids to increase their potency and effect. Terpenes are molecules found in many plants (and in some insects!) that produce a strong aroma. A representative from flavor house True Terpenes explains that “Plants, animals, microbes, and fungi produce terpenes to carry out necessary biological functions… Terpenes play an equally important role in influencing the way we taste, smell, and feel when a plant, herb, or fruit is consumed.”
When extracted, these molecules are easily broken down with heat and other factors, but they’re worth preserving, because different terpenes provide unique benefits. Limonene, for example, improves mood and calms anxiety. And myrcene has anti-inflammatory properties.
Terpenes are occasionally called terpenoids, but these terms are not interchangeable. Terpenoids are derived from terpenes and have slightly different molecular structures.
How Do Terpenes Work?
Cannabis is rich in many types of terpenes, including limonene, myrcene, humulene, and more. Because of this, terpenes are often associated with cannabis. But the wide abundance of terpenes makes them beneficially distinct. Their presence in cannabis oils has been shown to meaningfully affect the experience of CBD products. However, due to their volatile nature, many are destroyed when CBD oil is extracted from cannabis plants.
Certain brands work to avoid losing the terpenes. CBD products that are labeled as “full-spectrum” are processed in a way to maintain the full range of beneficial ingredients derived from cannabis, including the many types of terpenes. This produces the so-called entourage effect—cannabinoids working synergistically and magnifying the benefits of the plant’s individual components.
Some companies go so far as to add terpenes to their CBD products to emphasize different benefits and tailor the experience to cause certain effects. You can also buy terpenes separately to mix in with your own CBD products to tweak their effects.
Be sure to look up the recommended ratios, though, because terpenes are not meant to be consumed undiluted. As more and more companies understand the benefits of terpenes, the market is diversifying to accommodate a wider variety of consumer needs.
