Pellet Grill Buying Guide & FAQ
How We Selected Our Choice Of Pellet Grills
Sifting through a broad range of pellet grills to select 8 of the finest models was no easy feat. But with some hard work and a whole lot of determination, we narrowed our list down by taking the following factors into account:
Brand – When we pay attention to the brands behind the models we list, we like to include a variety of both household names as well as give mention to new kids on the block who have impressed us with their innovation. The end result is a selection of products that come with an excellent reputation and reliability beyond measure.
Reviews – While we have our own take on the grills we have featured, we cannot deny the fact that individuals can view a product in a different light. So, to ensure that our choices remain unbiased and worthy of the praise we give them, we scour the net for authentic reviews. We then weigh the good reviews with the bad to come to an accurate conclusion.
Price – We want you to have awesome tasting food no matter your budget! This is why we included a variety of quality wood and electric pellet grills that come with price tags ranging from low to high. It was also very important to us to make sure that each model was fairly priced so that we can sleep soundly at night knowing that you received value for money.
Features To Look For In A Pellet Grill
Temperature Control - Most grills will come with one of three different types of temperature controls:
Three Stage Controllers - A little on the outdated side, the control limits use to 3 options, namely to smoke your meat on a low, medium, or high setting. Without being able to set a precise temperature, you are restricted to your cooking options.
Multi-position And Digital Controllers - These controllers often include other innovative solutions, like timers, alerts, and digital thermometers. Allowing you to set the temperature at intervals of +/- 25 degrees Fahrenheit, a pellet cooker gives you more choice when it comes to how long you want to cook your meat for.
PID Controller - This is one of the more top-of-the-range options that features an assortment of temperature settings, precisely maintain temperatures at intervals of +/- 5 degrees. PID controllers also include impressive algorithms that take many factors into account such as weather changes and the opening of the lid – this means that the inner temperature is maintained despite the external elements.
Grill Capacity - Much like traditional grills, cooking capacity is something you should factor in before making a purchase. Will you be using your pellet smoker for intimate dinners or are you planning on entertaining many guests at a time? In this case, size matters!
Pellet Capacity - Pellets are stored in the grill’s hopper and the larger the hopper is, the more pellets it can contain. If you plan on slow cooking meals, then you will need to ensure that there are enough pellets to last a few hours at the very least.
Warming Rack - Secondary cooking racks or “warming” racks can serve two purposes. They can give you additional cooking space or they can help to keep cooked foods warm while you finish off the rest of your meal prep. They’re really handy to have but do not always come with smaller sized pellet grills.
Searing Box - If you take your cooking very seriously then a searing box will help you to seal in flavour and add inviting grills marks to your filet mignon or rib eye. Larger grill feature searing boxes that are neatly attached to the side of the main grill and while they do take up a little more space, they allow you to add more variety to your meals.
Smoker - A smoker grill will come standard with smoking functionality – adding a distinctive “wood fire oven” taste to your meals. You can select from a variety of hardwood flavours to compliment whatever you’re cooking. You can pair apple hardwood with chicken and vegetables or you can opt for oak or maple to complement beef.
Wi-Fi - Yup, you heard right! Your most modern grills come equipped with a control board that wirelessly connects to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. This means that no matter where you are, you can remotely monitor and control your cooking. Wi-Fi compatible models usually come with a downloadable app that helps you to adjust the grill’s temperature or simply switch it on and off - even if you’re not at home!
Portability - Most wood pellet smokers can be wheeled around your yard with little effort, but that’s pretty much where it stops. Being on the bulky and heavy side, larger family grills aren’t ideal for lugging about in cars and packing one away in a boot could be a challenging if not impossible exercise. If you are looking for a more mobile option, there are smaller and foldable models that are ideal for camping trips or BBQs in the park.
Meat Probes - Most grills can accommodate a meat probe but they do not all come standard with this added accessory. You can, however, purchase them separately. Also, some probes are just average thermometers while others are programmable. The most advanced meat probes can even monitor temperatures and then signal the grill to lower the heat as your food reaches its finishing temperature.
Extra Accessories - From covers to an assortment of racks, each model will come with its own assortment of accessories. Some brands might be more generous than others and will throw some freebies into the mix. If, however, the tool or utensil you are looking for doesn’t come standard with the grill you have in mind, you can always order it separately.
