Water sports are definitely a popular activity for professionals and amateurs alike. Although they are low impact due to water offering buoyancy, they can still offer a great workout and a whole lot of rigorous fun. Beaches, lakes and rivers see a lot of water sports enthusiasts but not all beaches and river banks consist of soft sand. Rocky surfaces are brutal on bare feet and even soft sand is harsh under a burning sun. That’s why water shoes are so popular for those who like to participate in water sports. They protect the feet over rough areas near water and if you like kayaking or rowing, they give you a little bit of extra grip and stability.
While most water shoes are only worn in or around water, some people like to put them on at home and wear them to their aquatic destination. Some of the best water shoes for men are definitely comfortable enough and durable enough to fit the multi-purpose description. We’ve put together a selection of some great water shoes for men so you can choose the best ones for you.

Water Shoes For Man Buying Guide & FAQ
How do we choose our selection of water shoes?
Brand – When choosing the best water shoes for men, we chose brands that specialize in sporting goods, in particular, footwear. The best brands are from manufacturers who devote time and resources to design, research and development so you can be sure you are getting a pair of shoes that will perform well in and out of the water.
Reviews – What better way to get an idea of how well a product performs than to research the reviews of customers who have already tried them out. We can learn a lot about a product by reading the reviews. Reviews that come from the general public are honest and independent so you can be sure you are not getting the hard sell. It’s not enough to just look at the positive reviews. We like to look at the negative ones as well. These tell us what to look out for but it doesn’t necessarily mean the product will not meet the requirements you are looking. What works well for one person, may not do so great for another so reviews will still be helpful, regardless of the type of feedback given.
Quality – Any type of footwear should be chosen for their quality and water shoes for men are no different. Feet are often exposed and vulnerable in and around water so it’s important to protect them as much as we can. That means sticking with good quality water shoes, made from good quality materials. Cheap water shoes may be great for a short while but it is worth avoiding cheap imitations and spending a little more to get a great quality pair of shoes that will last longer.
Price – Our selection of water shoes has a price that is suitable for anyone. We have chosen a range of different water shoes with different price tags to suit any budget. All of them are great value for money but some have more performance features than others.
Features to look for in water shoes?
Materials – There are many materials that can go into the making of water shoes but the main ones to look for are those that are quick drying and breathable. These are generally made from breathable mesh or quick drying neoprene. The rubber soles should be sturdy yet flexible for maximum movement and the midsole should also offer lots of comfort. Because of the activity that many water shoes see, the materials should be durable, flexible and offer comfort, breathability and be quick drying.
Weight – When participating in water sports, one thing to remember is that waterlogged clothes or shoes can be incredibly heavy. That is why you should always look for water shoes that are lightweight and offer adequate draining. The whole purpose of the shoe is to provide protection for the feet and grip on wet surfaces, without being a hindrance to the wearer.
Comfort – There is not much that can ruin an active person’s day like a pair of uncomfortable shoes. For all their sleek designs and lightweight materials, water shoes can still be uncomfortable. For this reason you should always make comfort a high priority when choosing any type of footwear, including water shoes. When your feet are in comfortable shoes, your entire focus will be on your sports or activities and not on the fact that your shoes are tight or chaffing. This is a special consideration when it comes to water shoes as they should be comfortable whether you are in or out of the water, or regardless of whether they are wet or dry.
Traction – One of the main purposes of water shoes is to provide traction on potentially wet and slippery surfaces. The traction should perform in such a way that your feet should be able to stop and stabilize on a surface to prevent you from slipping and possibly sustaining an injury. Always check the soles and the tread of water shoes for traction before you consider purchasing them. If you’re out sailing or paddlebaording you will really appreciate a pair of water shoes with good traction when you need to keep your balance on wet surfaces.
Drainage Capability – When you consider the fact that water shoes have indeed been designed for water, you don’t want these shoes to absorb and retain the water and become heavy anchors on your feet. The drainage capabilities should be pushing water out of the sides of your shoes when you start walking on dry land again. The water usually drains out through the mesh or from drainage ports on the sides or event he bottoms of the shoes. The best aqua shoes are made to ensure the transition between land and water is relatively seamless and without any discomfort so the faster the water drains out of the shoes, the better.
Ability To Dry Fast – If you’ve ever had to walk around with wet feet you’ll know it’s pretty uncomfortable. Walking around with water in your shoes can be absolutely miserable. That’s when you need a pair of water shoes with the ability to dry fast. This feature usually comes down to the materials used in the construction of the shoes. The textiles should be using quick-dry technology and offer lots of ventilation. Then too, many water shoes have perforations on the sides for added breathability. This also assists in the quick drying process. The shoes should dry relatively fast once you take them off, but you also want them to dry as fast as possible when you need to continue wearing them.
Water Shoes For Man FAQ
Q: What are water shoes?
A: As the name suggests, water shoes are simply a type of footwear that you can wear for sports or activities you perform in or around water and where they are most likely going to get wet. Such shoes are often worn on boats, boards or for swimming in waters where rocks or other sharp objects may be present. Some water shoes can also be worn by hikers who choose trails that take them over creeks and alongside rivers and lakes. Their main purpose is to protect the feet from getting cuts and abrasions from the bottom of sea or river beds, but many today also have some serious rubber treads on the soles to provide non-slip traction when foot stability it important. Apart from their non-slip properties, water shoes have good drainage points and the materials used in constructing these shoes are quick drying and very lightweight.
Q: How should water shoes fit?
A: There are a number of factors you should take into consideration when choosing the right fit of water shoes. Water shoes, in particular should fit snugly. At the same time, you don’t want water shoes that are too tight. If you’ve ever gotten your normal street shoes wet, you’ll have experienced how uncomfortable they are once they are drying. Especially if they are still on your feet. When properly fitted, water shoes will remain on your feet no matter what aquatic activity you choose to participate in. You should be able to swim through crashing waves or walk through muddy creek beds without losing your shoes. Too tight and the shoes can limit circulation to your feet which is painful and uncomfortable.
Q: What is the difference between Water Shoes and Water Socks?
A: Just as you would normally wear a pair of socks with your everyday shoes, so too, there are Water Socks that have been designed to be worn with Water Shoes. Both are particularly important when you are walking over rocky sea or river beds as can stop sharp objects from poking through and cutting your feet. Water shoes can look similar to water socks and depending on your intended activity, you can wear water socks with your water shoes, or you can wear them individually. Water socks are also convenient for divers to wear with the diving boots.
Q: Do you wear socks with water shoes?
A: You don’t necessarily need to wear socks with your water shoes. For many aquatic activities you can easily get away with wearing a pair of water shoes with bare feet. However, there are a number of occasions where the addition of water socks would be extremely beneficial. One of these occasions would be diving or scuba diving. The deeper you go down into a body of water, the cooler it becomes. The extremities are usually the first places we’ll start to feel cold, and feet even more so. Wearing a good quality pair of water socks with your water shoes or boots for these activities will help to keep your feet warm. You can also wear them when you are snorkeling and you’re worried about cutting your feet on old shells, coral and rocks.
Q: How to get sand out of Water Shoes?
A: Sand in your shoes can be horribly uncomfortable. It is bumpy, scratchy and just plain nasty. Beaches are amazing places for lots of aquatic fun, but if you get sand in your water shoes, you need to get it out as soon as you can and especially if you plan on engaging in more activities. If a considerable amount of sand has managed to find its way into your shoes, there are a number of steps you need to take as soon as possible to get it out.
Firstly, take your water shoes apart. You may be able to see lots of sand inside the shoe, but there could also be a fair bit of it under the inner sole of your shoe.
Shake out as much of the sand as possible. You’ll need to be particularly meticulous with this as much of the sand may have lodged into the meshing of your water shoes.
Once you’ve shaken out all the sand, wash or rinse your shoes in clean water. If they are a little more on the dirty side, you can use a mild detergent and sponge off any excess dirt or grime. Just remember that you will then need to rinse your water shoes thoroughly.
Try and let them dry completely before you need to use them again. If you can, turn them inside out and dry from the inside first.
Once they are dry, put them back together again.
Q: Can I wash my water shoes in the washing machine?
А: You may be able to get away with washing your water shoes in the washing machine but it’s not always recommended. First and foremost, you should always check the manufacturer’s recommendations on the best way to wash your water shoes. If you do decide to wash your water shoes in the washing machine, use a minimum amount of detergent. Preferably a mild liquid detergent. The cycle should be a shorter one using cold water only. Once washed, allow your water shoes to dry completely before wearing them again. Never, dry your water shoes in a clothes dryer. The heat can cause your shoes to lose their form, or damage the glue causing your water shoes to fall apart.
The best water shoes are the ones you will barely notice. In many ways you’ll be wearing them as a second skin for your feet so you won’t cut or scratch your feet at the bottom of the sea or creek beds. They will definitely make your aquatic adventures more enjoyable because your feet will be secured, stable and cozy. I mean, the only time you really notice what going on with your feet is when they are hurting. As technology is advancing in the manufacturing and design of water shoes, we’ll see more multi-purpose shoes that you can wear in and out of the water with a minimum of fuss. Get yourself a pair of water shoes this summer and enjoy all the water activities that your local aquatic wonderland has to offer.
