The Pachamama Origin
The Pachamama story was born after Founder Brandon Stump hit rock bottom. Stump’s brother Ryan shocked him awake during a harsh but honest face-to-face, knee-to-knee conversation about Stump’s drug addiction. Ryan made it brutally clear that Stump’s death wish would come true unless he stopped using. It was exactly what Stump needed to hear. He answered the call and began walking the road of sobriety.
What helped his recovery? CBD, of course! Stump implemented healthier habits into his daily routine, and CBD helped him cultivate emotional balance and physical wellbeing into all aspects of his life. Already known for his compassion and empathy, Stump became an inspiration to people in his life. Friends and acquaintances noticed the changes he’d adopted and gravitated to him. Stump invited people in need of sobriety to stay with him at his house to help them achieve a clean-and-sober life, too. That’s when he reached out to his brother Ryan to join him in California.
“In the first couple of years of Brandon’s sobriety, I got a call saying, ‘Hey man, I’ve got two houses filled with people on their way to sobriety. Come to California, quit your job, and help me.’” Ryan did move to California, and helped his brother start Pachamama. He’s now the COO. The company’s genesis is rooted in family, benevolence, community, and innovation.
CBD Against Addiction
Study after study has shown that CBD helps addicts ween off drugs for good. In an article written in the PMC US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, Mélissa Prud’homme, Romulus Cata, and Didier Jutras-Aswad write, “Drug addiction is a chronically relapsing disorder characterized by the compulsive desire to use drugs and a loss of control over consumption. Cannabidiol (CBD), the second most abundant component of cannabis, is thought to modulate various neuronal circuits involved in drug addiction.”
The goal of this study was to summarize the available preclinical and clinical data on the impact of CBD on addictive behaviors. Research and clinical studies continue to show that CBD is effective in aiding addiction recovery. Brandon Stump is living proof that CBD can help addicts overcome their addiction, and Pachamama grew from this direct experience.
“When I was addicted to drugs and alcohol, I always wanted the purest strongest product to get the effect I was so desperately addicted to,” he says. “Now that I’m sober, I’ve kept that same desire. To only put the purest, highest quality products into my body. At my home, I have a water filter; when I grocery shop I read the labels; at restaurants, I try to eat locally sourced organic foods. So when we created Pachamama, it had to be the best. So I’d say the biggest life take away from Pachamama would be ‘no shortcuts.’ Take the extra time, spend the extra money, do the extra research, [then] deliver something worth the wait.”
Named for the fertility goddess of the Inca, Pachamama is a uniquely soulful brand known for its herbal-infused tinctures, topicals, gel caps, and vapes. Eager to learn a bit more, we caught up with Stump for a short Q + A.
How did you create the herbal properties for each tincture?
We don’t want to add artificial flavors to our tinctures. Instead, we pair each one with ethically sourced, nutrient-rich superfoods and adaptogens from around the world. By doing this, each of our tinctures serves a different intended purpose. For example, we have our Kava Kava Valerian tincture for sleep and our Goji Cacao tincture for daytime focus.
Since each tincture has such definitive flavor profiles, do you ever use them in cuisine? If so, any favorite food/drink combos?
That’s a great question. Foods rich in healthy fats can help to maximize CBD absorption in the body. I always recommend drizzling our Green Tea Echinacea or Holy Basil Ylang Ylang tinctures into avocado-based dishes, like guacamole or even a simple avocado toast.
For the holidays, garnishing sweet potato dishes with our Black Pepper Turmeric tincture is an immune-boosting, gut-health-supporting twist on a seasonal classic.
Our Director of Lifestyle, Jeremy Jackson has also come up with some pretty cool Pachamama mocktails, like his Jugo de Pachamama Mocktail (Juice of the Mother, Goddess of Earth).
Tell us about the creation of the Vegan CBD Gel Caps.
All of our products are vegan, and we didn’t want our gel caps to be any different. We actually have the first-ever tapioca-based, full-spectrum vegan gel caps. The capsules house a precise dose of 25mg of our award-winning full-spectrum CBD oil and act as an extended-release mechanism for the CBD.
What is your product output? How much supply is available?
The supply chain is a big focus of ours. Single-origin ensures we maintain quality, and that is most important. Our farms harvest in October and that supply largely dictates our supply for the year.
